On this day we mark the end of summer and beginning of Fall.
The Earth is tilted at an angle on its axis, which means that the Sun illuminates the northern and southern hemispheres differently depending on where the Earth is along its orbit. However, at two points in the year-- once during spring and once during fall-- the Sun illuminates the Northern and Southern hemispheres equally.
This is what's known as an equinox.
